UTE Açu I will be a coal-fired thermoelectric power plant to be built in an area contiguous to the  Açu Superport, an LLX venture in the municipality of São João Barra (RJ).

Designed with  2.100 MW installed capacity,  UTE Açu I will meet the demand from both the regulated market and the Açu industrial complex. Steel mills, ore pelletizing plants, cement plants and product storage and handing and other facilities will be established in this complex.

It is estimated that every year the thermoelectric plant will consume 3.5 million tons of coal brought from  MPX own mines in Colombia.

In October, 2009,   UTE Açu I issued an  Installation License  by State of Rio de Janeiro Institute of the Environment (Inea).

The 3,300 MW installed capacity UTE Açu II will also be built inside the Açu industrial complex
