Located in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante, Energia Pecém and Pecém II are two coal-fueled thermoelectric power plants expected to increase power generation in Ceará by 90%.

Energia Pecém features two  360 MW modules, totaling     720 MW, of which MPX owns 50% and EDP 50%. In 2012, the project has been authorized by the National Energy Agency  (Aneel) to start, on december 1st, the commercial operation of its first 360 MW installed capacity generation unit.

At the new energy auction A-5, held in October,  2007, Energia Pecém contracted 615 average MW, assuring fixed earnings of approximately R$ 467,4 million (base: March/2009) indexed to the IPCA inflation index , for 15 years, as of 2012.

Since December 2006, this plant has an Installation License issued by State of Ceará Superintendency of the Environment  (Semace).

Aiming at local labor development for the Itaqui, Pecém and Parnaíba power plants,  MPX has already qualified over 2,200 in the states where the company is doing business in association with well known teaching institutions.

In  Ceará,  Energia Pecém has already qualified 317 residents. In the communities of Pecém and Taiba, 48 people were trained in taxidermy and 274 in Civil Construction, Mechanical and Industrial Welding. The courses are ministered in association with Ceará Technological Education Center and the São Gonçalo do Amarante City Hall. A new class will begin in December 2012 to over 100 students.
