Situated in São Luís (MA), five kilometers from the Itaqui Port, MPX Itaqui will be a pulverized coal-fueled thermoelectric plant designed with
360 MW installed capacity– enough to supply power, on average, to 65% of the state of Maranhão.
At the new energy auction A-5, held in October 2007, MPX Itaqui traded 315 average MW, ensuring fixed earnings of about R$ 252 million (base: March/2009) , indexed to the IPCA inflation index, for 15 years, as of 2012.
In March 2009, MPX Itaqui was issued an
Installation License by the
Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).
This plant will receive the coal it needs at the Port of Itaqui. When plant works relying on
local labor, reach their peak, this venture will generate approximately ten thousand direct and indirect new job opportunities, thus contributing to regional market warm-up.
Aiming at local labor development for the Itaqui, Pecém and Parnaíba power plants, MPX has already qualified 1,200 in the states where the company is doing business in association with well known teaching institutions.
MPX Itaqui has already
qualified 600 residents of São Luís (MA) in different courses. Overall,
30 groups have already completed their courses, and another two groups will graduate by the end of the year. This is a project developed jointly with Senai and plant construction consortium.
These are some of the courses offered by MPX in the region: Bricklayer, Metal Setter, Carpenter, Hydraulic Plumber, Metal Works, NR10, First Aid, Firefighting and Administrative Assistant.
In a joint initiative with State of Maranhão Technological Institute and Maranhão Education and Technological Development Foundation, MPX Itaqui has offered training to thermoelectric plant operators. Out of the 35 trainees,
15 have already been hired to work at the plant.Follow-up the progress of the works
The
Relocation of the families that previously lived at plant construction site and in the vicinities, and the use of the Clean Coal Technology are other concrete actions taken by MPX Itaqui in line with the best
sustainability and socioenvironmental responsibility practices.
